LLSC Hosts 2009 USODA Southeast Championship/ Opti Only Junior Olympic Sailing Festival
First- thank you to the over 60 volunteers from LLSC and a few from other clubs that made this event possible. Without them – we would not have been able to put on the world class regatta that we did. Thank you to all!!!
USODA Rep Rob Rowlands kept us headed in the right direction and pitched in with input on Sailing Instructions, coach/ safety boat registration, web database updates, scoring program instruction and other important matters.
Many people took advantage of the LLSC campsites which were well organized by Chris Voith. While some of the tent campers were a little soggy, they survived the additional rainfall Friday and Saturday night and began to dry out on Sunday. However, I know that the kids had a great time on the inflatable obstacle course and slide, especially Saturday evening in the rain.
The great news was that our very capable PRO, Lee Estes and his crew were able to run 4 Trapezoid with Reaching Finish races on Saturday with winds from the east in the range of 5 knots building to 10 knots with everyone off the water before the heavy Saturday evening rain shower came. Then Sunday, we had another 4 races with the same course but reverse direction on a gorgeous, sunny weather with a nice westerly breeze that was in the range of 7-12 knots. It was a great test of skill for all of the competitors. Special Thanks to my wife, Susan, for making some of the Race Committee flags we needed.
Meanwhile, the Green fleet was led by Tom Coleman with Mike “Mr. Opti” Funsch and his dad, Dick Funsch, and crew running races. That was appropriate since Mike’s three kids made up almost 1/3 of the green fleet. Mike also organized all of the motor boat brigade.
Saturday night, after a very filling pork tenderloin dinner by Joe Cumbie, Jo Ann Estes and the rest of the kitchen volunteers we were treated to a winners round table emceed by Mike Funsch, winner of the 1979 Opti Worlds, and then a second special treat was Ed Baird, helmsman of 2007 America’s Cup winner Alinghi, speaking to the sailors and parents about the general aspects of the upcoming competition in February. The sailors asked Ed a lot of good questions, but he was very stingy with the details such as height of the mast and other competitive secrets. J
At the beginning of the awards ceremony, we gave door prizes that were donated to us by our sponsors via our local merchants plus US Sailing by drawing out the check in/ checkout key chains that Carol Reddaway made for the competitors.
Thank you to all of our sponsors:

We had 85 competitors check in out of 90 entries. 75 raced in the championship fleet and 10 were in the green fleet. Our scorer, Mike Stewart has posted the preliminary results on USODA website at: https://ssl4.westserver.net/usoda.org/site/uploaded_files/regattas_results/Files/Preliminary%20Results/Index.HTM After doing the math, the top 23 competitors in the Championship fleet who don’t age out are qualified for Team Trials next year in Houston.

Congratulations to all of our Junior Participants in the 2009 Commissioning Junior Governors Cup Racing. We had a total of 10 Optis competing in Gold and Silver plus 2 420s from Georgia Tech. The Juniors had a nice little breeze in the LLSC cove most of the afternoon on Saturday with 3 Opti races and 4 420 races (while the adult fleet did not get any races in due to lack of breeze outside the LLSC bay). On Sunday, there was a 1 hour postponement until the breeze came in around 12:30 out of the SSW and eventually South at 7-10 knots or so and we did 4 more Opti races (no 420s). What a wonderful day for sailing. The juniors had dinner at 5:30pm and the Jr. Officers participated in the Commissioning Ceremony. Kudos to Amy Larkin and team for a great time.
